The 3.6 Pentastar's plastic oil filter housing, which also holds the oil cooler, sits in the valley under the intake. When it cracks or its seals fail, oil and sometimes coolant pool in the valley and drip down the back of the engine. Mopar has revised the part several times; 68596317AB is the current OEM plastic housing for 2014+ JKs.

Fitment

Current Mopar number for 2014-and-later JK 3.6. The Dorman 926-959 aluminum kit is also cataloged for JL 3.6 applications; confirm your year and engine before buying. 2012–2013 JKs need a filter change if converted (see below). Always confirm the number on your old part or run your VIN at a Mopar parts counter before you order.

Rebuild, repair or replace?

This isn't a part you rebuild; you replace the housing and its seals. The choice is plastic or aluminum. The latest Mopar plastic is a legitimate fix, but the cap torque matters for the life of the Jeep. The Dorman aluminum kit means the cap can't crack the housing again and comes with the intake gaskets you need anyway. Skip the roughly $90 unbranded aluminum copies.

Trap for 2012–2013 JKs: they used a nipple-style filter (MO-744). The 926-959 is the 2014+ design, so after installing it you must use the flat-bottom 2014+ filter from then on. The wrong filter can hold the bypass open and set P06DD. Key torques from our guide: the filter cap is 18 ft-lbs and the oil pressure/temp sensors are 15 ft-lbs.

FAQ

Is the Dorman aluminum housing better than Mopar?

Both are good fixes. Aluminum avoids the cap-crack failure; the latest Mopar plastic has revised seals. Avoid no-name copies.

Do I have to remove the upper intake?

Yes. The housing sits in the valley, so the upper intake comes off. Buy new intake gaskets (included in the Dorman kit).

Which filter do I use after the swap?

The 2014+ flat-bottom filter: Mopar 68191349AC / MO-349 or WIX WL10010.
