You’ve seen it: a rubber duck riding shotgun on a Wrangler dash, or one tucked by a mirror in a parking lot with a Sharpie note. That’s Jeep ducking — also called Duck Duck Jeep — and it’s one of the rare viral trends that stayed kind.

What Is Jeep Ducking?

Jeep ducking is leaving a rubber duck on another Jeep as a compliment and a smile. The usual etiquette:

  1. Spot a Jeep you like (stock or built — doesn’t matter).
  2. Leave a duck where the owner will find it — mirror, hood, door handle area, or hand it over if they’re standing there.
  3. Optional: write a short note (“Nice rig,” “Have a great day”).
  4. Take a photo if you want, tag #DuckDuckJeep, and move on. Don’t damage anything, don’t block doors, don’t leave trash.

Many owners keep ducks they receive on the dash or trade them at meets. Getting ducked is a compliment. Ducking someone else is the point.

Where Jeep Ducking Started (July 2020)

The movement that’s become a Jeep community habit traces to July 2020 and Allison Parliament.

She had driven from Alabama to Ontario during COVID to help family. Shortly after crossing into Canada, a hostile encounter at a gas station left her shaken. After her quarantine ended, she bought a bag of rubber ducks — originally for a goofy prank at home. Outside a shop in the Bancroft, Ontario area, she spotted a heavily built Jeep, had no paper for a note, and wrote on a duck instead. She left it for the owner.

The owner caught her, loved it, and encouraged her to share it. They posted with #DuckDuckJeep. It exploded. Within hours the hashtag was pulling in thousands of followers and messages from Jeep owners who wanted to pass the kindness on.

Jeep later recognized Parliament as the founder of the Duck Duck Jeep movement. Dealers and owners worldwide picked it up — ducks showing up from trailheads to overseas parking lots. The core message she kept repeating: choose kindness, because you don’t know what someone is carrying that day.

Why It Stuck

Jeeps already had a wave culture. Ducking gave it a physical token you can leave behind.

MINI owners had an earlier rubber-duck giveaway tradition in the car-show scene. Jeep ducking as a mass parking-lot / road-trip habit — with the #DuckDuckJeep identity — is the 2020 Parliament story that went global.

Etiquette (Don’t Be That Ducker)

Allison Parliament’s Legacy

Allison Parliament died suddenly in June 2024. The Jeep community kept ducking in her honor. Her mother, Cheryl Parliament, and the wider #DuckDuckJeep network have continued the kindness message she started. If you duck someone this week, you’re part of that chain — not just a meme.

Jeep Ducking FAQ

Who started Jeep ducking?
Allison Parliament in Ontario in July 2020, after leaving a rubber duck with a note on a stranger’s Jeep and posting #DuckDuckJeep.

Do I have to drive a Wrangler?
The culture is Jeep-wide — Wrangler, Gladiator, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, and older YJ/TJ builds all get ducked. The classic rule is still “duck a Jeep.”

Is it okay to take a duck that was left for someone else?
No. If it’s on their Jeep, it’s theirs. Build your stash by ducking and by trading at meets.

What should I write on the duck?
Keep it short and friendly: “Nice Jeep,” “Have a great day,” or your Instagram if you want a duck-back.

Where do I put the duck?
Side mirror, wiper arm, hood near the windshield, or hand it to the owner. Don’t put anything where it can fall into traffic or scratch paint.

Quick Reference

The trail’s more fun when strangers leave each other little yellow (or Halloween) reminders that someone noticed the build. Grab a pack, keep them in the Jeep, and duck the next Wrangler that makes you look twice.
