A Jeep interior takes a beating no other car's does. Doors off, top down, wet dogs, beach sand, muddy boots, and the pop-up storm that soaks the seats before you get the bikini top back on. Good seat covers and real floor liners are the difference between hosing it out in five minutes and smelling mildew all summer. Here's what each material is good at and which ones fit which Jeep.

Wet carpet rots floor pans from the top down. The checklist covers floors, hinges, and the frame.

Seat Cover Materials

Neoprene: best for wet

Neoprene is wetsuit material. Water beads up on it, and it rinses clean. If your Jeep sees beach days, swimming-hole trips, or wet dogs, this is the one.

The tradeoffs: it doesn't breathe much, so it can feel warm in a Gulf Coast August, and cheap neoprene fades in the sun. Rough Country builds its kits in four layers (foam padding, polyester, and water-resistant neoprene) and backs them with a 2-year warranty. Each kit includes front and rear covers plus headrest covers where they apply.

Canvas: best for breathing and abuse

Heavy canvas, like Carhartt duck, breathes better than neoprene and shrugs off tools, gear bags, and work boots. It's water-resistant, not waterproof, so a soaking storm will get through eventually.

The Covercraft Carhartt SeatSaver is made from Carhartt duck weave fabric with a Rain Defender DWR treatment. Covercraft says it's machine washable. It covers the front bucket seats only.

Ballistic nylon: best for storage

600-denier ballistic nylon is the tough, tactical-looking stuff with MOLLE webbing on the back. It's waterproof and it turns the seat back into a gear wall for pouches, a first aid kit, or a flashlight.

The Smittybilt G.E.A.R. front covers are 600-denier ballistic nylon with MOLLE/PALS webbing, sold as a front pair. They aren't cheap, so check the current price before you fall in love.

Quick pick: wet and sandy, go neoprene. Hot and dusty or work truck, go canvas. Overland storage, go ballistic.

Floor Liners vs Floor Mats

Flat mats are flat rubber with a little lip. Fine for a commuter.

Molded liners are 3D-shaped to the footwell and run up the sides and the front. For a Jeep that's what you want, because water from a rainstorm or a doors-off day runs under a flat mat and soaks the carpet. A liner holds it.

Wranglers have rubber drain plugs in the floor, but wet carpet still holds water against the steel for days. That's how floor pans rot from the top down, especially in salt air.

Keeping It All Clean

Doors Off? Protect the Rest Too

If you're running doors-off and top-down all summer, the dash, the wiring, and your fire extinguisher are getting rained on too. Mount the extinguisher where it stays put: see our roll bar fire extinguisher guide. If you're about to swap tops for the season, the soft top install guide covers the job. Shopping for a used Jeep? Wet carpet and a musty smell are on our used JK inspection list for a reason.
